The Vestry, the Dean and I interviewed three very strong candidates any one of whom might have been appointed. We were unanimous that the Rev’d Margaret was the right person to become our next Provost and to take responsibility for St James Ardbrecknish and the gathered community at Kilbrandon.
Margi, as she is known, has been ordained for 16 years, so has a wealth of Parish experience. Her present role is as Rector of Backwell in the Diocese of Bath and Wells and she is also Rural Dean of Portishead Deanery in that Diocese
Margi and her husband James have, over recent years spent time in Argyll and the Isles and had already bought a house in the area for their eventual retirement, but they will obviously live in the rectory. James is an organist and music teacher and they have two adult sons. James is taking early retirement to allow their move to Oban. Before ordination, Margi was a music teacher, she grew up in a Church family and has sung in choirs all her life
Margi and James will both be at our Diocesan Syond and Conference day in March. We hope the Institution of the new Provost will be towards the end of May
We thank God for the guidance of the Holy Spirit during the whole process of discernment which has brought Margi to us
I am sure you will all join me in welcoming Margi and James to St John’s Cathedral, to Oban and to the Diocese.

Our most enjoyable Thursday coffee mornings have finished for the winter – we are hoping to restart them in May next year. They raised a most welcome £1870 for cathedral funds. A huge ‘thank you’ to Jenny and her team for all their hard work.
Volunteer needed – A Property Convener is required for St John’s. If you are interested or would like to know more about the responsibilities of these posts, please speak to the Provost.
Congregational Soup Lunches Soup Lunch Help
Fiona Kincaid writes: ‘To alleviate some of the pressure on our already-stretched social committee, I have volunteered to become soup lunch coordinator. The plan is to have four soup lunches a year: one mid-winter, one in late March some time before Easter, a third in June, and a fourth in the autumn. One family or group of people would volunteer to run a lunch. They would then be responsible for everything that makes that lunch happen smoothly: asking for help with soup making, baking, setting up, serving, and tidying up afterwards. The hope is that no one has to do more than one lunch a year. I am looking for volunteers to run lunches throughout the year. You can choose a date which suits you around the time suggested. Please think carefully about whether you can help in this way. I think it will not only spread the load, but will strengthen our community spirit in St John’s. Please contact me if you would like to volunteer in this way.’
